At present, there is an ongoing debate in congress whether to legalize, regulate or ban internet gambling altogether. However, its more popularly known as a lobbyist issue. We all know that ordinary American citizens don’t give any concern on this issue because it doesn’t necessarily affect their day to day living. But there are small factions in the whole population that is concern on this issue in their
These radicals that place our Senators and members of U.S. Congress in a very awkward position; politically speaking. On one hand, they all have individual positions on the issue and a constituency to address for; and then again they have particular involvement groups -who fund their political campaign pressuring them on their choices.
For instance, you are a Congressman in a Republican district who’s in his first term. You only won the Republican primaries in a very small margin. I think the most appropriate decision you must make is to vote for the UIGEA legislation which is an anti-gambling policy. Your general population will not care for the decision you make but the small groups of Republicans like the Focus on the Family and Christian Coalition will be delighted with your decision to support the anti gambling law. These groups has an great impact in your community, that in case you fail to support what they are lobbying will withdraw their support in your campaign and that would be goodbye into your political career.
That’s not exclusive to Republican candidates but also to all politicians as well. All of them will receive pressure from both sides of the ongoing legislation.
The point here is that our politicians will not based their decision for this legislation based on their personal preference but they will pick out the decision that will give them the greatest political advantage when election comes. They just have to support the small interest group that will support and fund their political career since the general population does not really care for this particular legislation.
