As someone whose English teacher considered her one of the worst writers in the world, you may be surprised to know that Lisa Nichols has two book deals going with the super-successful “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series. She was also featured in Rhonda Byrne’s “The Secret”. Lisa’s true passion lies in speaking and in the company she founded, Motivating the Teen Spirit LLC.
Motivating the Teen Spirit is an organization that has dramatically changed the lives of many teens and their parents. At least 60,000 lives have been touched, but more specifically, over 1,800 suicides have been prevented and nearly 1,000 high school dropouts have returned to school. Many teens have been reunited with their parents.
Lisa has had a passion for helping people since her youth. She remembers many prayers to God begging for help and guidance. She promised herself that if God would help her through, she’d later help others as well. Lisa was just like any other teenager, as social as could be, but she needed help with emotional illiteracy.
Greatness isn’t something you’re born with. It doesn’t come from some sort of “magic fairy dust.” Lisa Nichols believes every great person is a product of whatever life has dealt them. Each experience, whether good or bad, should be a learning one. Each challenge should be considered an opportunity for growth.
In Biblical days, Moses was called upon to speak, but he was so scared that he tried to get his brother Aaron to step in for him. Lisa was similar in her earlier days. She always wanted to be a speaker, but she was afraid. “How can I speak,” she thought. “I got a ‘D’ in speech class.” Lisa dwelled on her can’t-do attitude for five long years before finally following the path she believed God wanted her to follow.
Your passion might not be public speaking, but everyone has a passion for something, and nearly everyone struggles at some point to put that passion first in their life. Lisa’s fear wasn’t only the speech part of her passion, it was the insecurity of going out on a limb. She already had a six-figure income with benefits to support her young daughter. Why leave that?
You have to face your fears without letting your security get in the way. Think about how happy you’d be doing what you really want to do. Think what needs to be done to change your life. It doesn’t have to happen overnight, but change doesn’t happen by itself.
To overcome her fears, Lisa Nichols started studying speech, facilitation, and entrepreneurship. She started helping teens for free. Only when she had built up confidence and credibility did she start charging a fee for her services. As a result, she is happier today than she’s ever been. Find a way to overcome your obstacles, and become happily successful!
